AI in Education: Why Students Must Embrace AI to Stay Ahead

As artificial intelligence (AI) continues to transform industries, students must equip themselves with AI skills to stay competitive. FLAME University’s Vice Chancellor, Professor Dishan Kamdar, emphasizes that AI is not just a trend but a critical tool for the future. “Generative AI is here to stay—it’s the new internet,” says Kamdar, highlighting the university’s commitment to integrating emerging technologies like prompt engineering and data analytics into their curriculum.

Kamdar points out that keeping up with technological advancements requires universities to evolve constantly. At FLAME University, the curriculum is reviewed every four years to ensure it meets the demands of a fast-changing world, helping students remain ahead in the professional landscape.

In an interview, Kamdar discussed the growing importance of AI skills, experiential learning, and the need for a multidisciplinary approach in education. He stressed the importance of financial and digital literacy, asserting that these are lifelong skills students need to thrive in today’s world.

The Importance of AI and Digital Skills

According to Kamdar, there’s a significant gap in AI education in India. “While AI is surrounded by hype, many institutions are yet to fully integrate it into their programs,” he notes. However, he believes that embracing technology in the classroom is crucial for preparing students for the future.

Kamdar also emphasizes digital literacy, stating that students must be proficient in tools like Excel, R, and Python. These skills are essential as they are increasingly required in the modern workplace.

Experiential Learning at FLAME

FLAME University is recognized for its commitment to experiential learning. Kamdar explains that students engage in hands-on projects, internships, and real-world challenges to enhance their learning. Initiatives like the Development Activities Program (DAP) and the Discover India Program (DIP) allow students to apply classroom knowledge to real-world issues, fostering critical thinking and creativity.

The university’s four-year program integrates field experiences across disciplines, combining industry immersion and research projects to equip students with practical skills.

Benefits of Multidisciplinary Education

FLAME University’s liberal and multidisciplinary model allows students to explore diverse subjects, combining majors and minors to create a well-rounded skillset. Kamdar believes this flexibility helps students cultivate adaptability, critical thinking, and problem-solving abilities—qualities highly valued by employers.

In addition to core specializations, students must complete courses in digital literacy, financial literacy, ethics, and public speaking. This comprehensive approach ensures that students are prepared for the demands of the modern workplace.
