LAN in Computer Networks

There are various types of area networks that help computers to connect and communicate with different computers through any medium.

The major types of area networks:

  • LAN
  • MAN
  • WAN

We will be discussing LAN in this article.

LAN stands for Local Area Network. It is a private network that connects network devices in a way that personal computers and workstations can share data, tools, and programs within a limited area like a residence or an office.

The distinguishing factors of LAN are as follows:

  1. The network size is limited to a few kilometres.
  2. The data transfer rate is high and can range between 100 MBPS to 1000 MBPS.
  3. The common topologies of LAN are bus, ring, mesh, and star.
  4. LANs are limitedly scalable.
  5. LAN incorporates just a single type of transmission medium.

Wireless LANs (WLAN)

They use high-frequency radio waves instead of cables for communication. They help provide a clutter-free environment and have an access point or a wireless router. Generally, WLANs are based on standard Wifi.

Virtual LANs (VLAN)

They are a virtual group of networks that appear on the same LAN irrespective of the physical network. The network administrators partition the networks to match the functional requirements of VLANs. Each VLAN comprises a subset of ports on multiple or single switches. This helps computers on a VLAN to communicate in the simulated environment.
