What is Google Hummingbird

Hummingbird is a search algorithm that is characterized by a fundamentally new approach to processing complex search phrases. Google has not yet revealed the technical principles of the Colibri. However, it is known that the largest “search engine” in the world no longer determines the relevance of resources to search queries using individual words or short phrases. The Hummingbird algorithm handles long search phrases by offering the user the sites that provide the most valuable responses to the query.

Humor determines the relevancy of the document to the search phrase, deciphering the connection between the concepts used in the query. He does this with the Knowledge Graph technology, which runs from 2012. There were earlier algorithms that determined relevancy by finding separate words in the document.

Thanks to the Graph Search technology, the Colibri correctly answers queries such as “where is the best place in Moscow to drink tea with friends”. The search engine “understands” that it is not about abstract places, but about specific cafes and restaurants.

Amit Singhal tells in his blog that Google’s Hummingbird allows you to respond to very complicated queries correctly.

Example:

In response to the search phrase “tell me about Impressionist artists” (tell me about Impressionist artists), Google provides comprehensive information on the relevant art direction.

Google’s expert states that Colibri is well aware of natural queries and is able to find the exact answers to them. It deprives users of the need to use quirky phrases to find the most relevant information.

Example:

Colibri understands the natural request “is it useful yoga,” because it is not interested in using the query “good and bad yoga”.

In addition, Google Hummingbird responds to comparison requests,

Example:

“Compare Butter and Olive Oil”. The search engine provides the user with structured information about the products and their comparative characteristics, rather than a simple set of data.

Google engineer Scott Huffman said during a presentation of a new algorithm that Colibri was responding to the behavior of voice search users. They practically do not ask a “search engine” for unnatural “seoshnyh” issues such as “double-walled wardrobe in Moscow cheap”. These users use natural queries, Google has developed an algorithm that provides the most accurate answers to them.

How the algorithm of Colibri will affect Internet marketing

Introducing the Hummingbird algorithm on Sept. 26, Amit Singhal stated that this technology has been running for about a month. It should be noted that brands, marketers and search engine optimizers runet and bourgeois did not report any significant changes in site positions in issuance, an abnormal drop or increase in traffic and other issues. In fact, experts learned about a new algorithm from a Google message. Therefore, we can assume that Kolibri has not had a serious impact on the results of issuance.

However, Google gives an example of the results of the launch of the Humor. If earlier on the “acid reflux prescription” (acid reflux recipes) lists of drugs were published similar to this page, now the search engine is trying to find a comprehensive answer, which includes, in addition to the list of drugs, a description of the disease itself and its treatment.

As noted above, the Kolibri algorithm is constructed around the search for a connection between the terms used in the search phrase. Therefore, its implementation will not affect short requests, they consist of one or two words.

Humor uses various components of the old algorithms, including Panda, Penguin, Graph Search, and also previously used ranking criteria, such as PageRank. According to Google engineers, they were able to retain the best elements of the technology used before Hummingbird.

With the introduction of a new search algorithm, Internet marketers and brands will face the following changes in the industry:

1. Manipulating a search engine, built on “stuffing” content to unnatural search phrases, will definitely go away in the past. It’s not even the case in Colibri, who does not search for keywords, but value for users. Simply ordinary Internet surfers are less likely to use “seoshnyh” phrases, since now the relevant content can be searched by asking the “search engine” natural questions.

2. And without that, the high demand for informative content of the expert level will grow even stronger. Indeed, the largest search engine in the world seeks to offer users the resources that provide the most valuable information in the context of the query.

3. Classic SEO will continue to transform and evolve. The clumsy search engine optimization, built on the search for fractures in Google algorithms and “Yandex”, will make another step to oblivion. Its place is discipline, built on providing users with search engines valuable information and content with a high level of expertise. Content Marketing, SEM Marketing – Choose Your Name Soul.
