SQL Introduction

SQL (i2tutorials)

Structured Query Language (SQL) is a standardized programming language that’s used to manage relational databases and perform various operations on the data in them.

It is used to perform operations such as update data on a database, or retrieve data from a database. Some common RDBMS that uses SQL are Oracle, Sybase, Microsoft SQL Server, Access, Ingres, etc.

In the 1970’s SQL was created and most of the database systems use SQL, most of them also have their own additional proprietary extensions that are usually only used on their system.

This Language is used not only by database administrators, but also by developers writing data integration scripts and data analysts looking to set up and run analytical queries.

Structured Query Language standard commands are “Select”, “Insert”, “Update”, “Delete”, “Create”, and “Drop” can be used to accomplish almost everything that one needs to do with a database.

SQL has two main pros over older read/write APIs. i.e.,

  • Firstly, introduced the concept of accessing many records with one single command
  • Secondly, it eliminates the need to specify how to reach a record.
