/    /  Tableau Grouping

You can create a gaggle to mix related members during a field. for instance , if you’re working with a view that shows average test scores by major, you would possibly want to group certain majors together to make major categories. English and History could be combined into a gaggle called humanistic discipline Majors, while Biology and Physics could be grouped as Science Majors.

Groups are useful for both correcting data errors (e.g., combining CA, Calif., and California into one data point) also as answering “what if” type questions (e.g., “What if we combined the East and West regions?).

Create a gaggle
There are multiple ways to make a gaggle you’ll create a gaggle from a field within the Data pane, or by selecting data within the view then clicking the group icon.

Create a gaggle by selecting data within the view
In the view, select one or more data points then , on the tooltip that appears, click the group icon .

Note: you’ll also select the group icon on the toolbar at the highest of the workspace.

If there are multiple levels of detail within the view, you want to select A level to group the members. you’ll select to group all dimensions, or simply one.

The selected members are combined into one group. A default name is made using the combined member names.

To rename the group, select it within the list and click on Rename.

Tip: you’ll look for members using the Find option near the bottom-right of the panel . (Tableau Desktop only)

Include an Other Group
When you create groups in Tableau, you’ve got the choice to group all remaining, or non-grouped members in an Other group.

The Include Other option is beneficial for highlighting certain groups or comparing specific groups against everything else. for instance , if have a view that shows sales versus profit product category, you would possibly want to spotlight the high and low performing categories within the view, and group all the opposite categories into an “Other” group.

Edit a gaggle
After you’ve got created a grouped field, you’ll add and take away members from the groups, create new groups, change the default group names, and alter the name of the grouped field. you’ll make some changes directly within the view, et al. through the Edit Group panel .

To remove members from an existing group:

In the Data pane, right-click the group field, then click Edit Group.

In the Edit Group panel , select one or more members, then click Ungroup.

The members are faraway from the present group. If you’ve got an Other group, the members are added thereto .

Click OK.

To create a replacement group during a group field:

In the Data pane, right-click the group field, then click Edit Group.

In the Edit Group panel , select one or more members, then click Group.
