Tableau’s data analytics are divided into two categories:

  1. Developer Tools:-Tableau tools used for development, such as creating charts, dashboards, reports, and visualizations, are called developer’s tools. This type of software includes Tableau Desktop and Tableau Public.
  2. Sharing Tools:-These tools share reports, visualizations, and dashboards created using the developer tools. These Tableau tools fall into three categories: Tableau Server, Tableau Online, and Tableau Reader.

Let’s see all the Tools one by one:

Tableau Desktop

There are many features available in Tableau Desktop, including the ability to code and customize reports. All the necessary work is done in Tableau Desktop, including creating reports, charts, and combining them into dashboards.

Tableau Desktop establishes connectivity between the Data Warehouse and other types of files for live data analysis. Dashboards and workbooks can be shared locally or publicly.

Based on the connectivity to the publishing option and data sources, Tableau Desktop is also classified into two parts-

  • Tableau Desktop Personal:- Access to the workbook is limited in the personal version of Tableau desktop. Online publication of the workbooks is not possible. Therefore, it should either be distributed offline or in Tableau public.
  • Tableau Desktop Professional:-  The program is similar to Tableau desktop. Workbooks created in Tableau desktop can be published online or in Tableau server. All types of data types are available in the professional version. For those who want to publish their workbook on Tableau server, this is the best option.

Tableau Public

Tableau’s cost-effective version is specially designed for users who want to save money. Public workbooks cannot be saved locally. Tableau’s public cloud can be accessed and viewed by anyone.

Cloud files have no privacy, so anyone can access and download them. For individuals who want to learn Tableau and share their data with the general public, this version is the best choice.

Tableau Online

Its functionality is similar to that of the tableau server, but the data is stored on Tableau’s cloud-based servers.

Data published in Tableau Online has no storage limit. With Tableau Online, you can connect directly to over 40 cloud data sources, including Hive, MySQL, Spark SQL, Amazon Aurora, etc.

To Both Tableau Server and Tableau online require the workbooks created by Tableau Desktop in order to be published. Tableau Server and Tableau Online also support Google Analytics and Salesforce.com data flowing from web applications.

Tableau Server

Workbooks and visualizations created in the Tableau Desktop application are shared correctly over the organization using the software. To share dashboards in the Tableau Server, you must first publish your workbook in Tableau Desktop. The workbook will be accessible only to authorized users once it has been uploaded to the server.

Tableau Server does not have to be installed on the machines of authorized users. By using a web browser, they can check reports using their login credentials. Data sharing is very quick and effective with Tableau server due to its high security.

Server control is in the hands of the organization’s admin. Hardware and software are maintained by the organization.

Tableau Reader

With Tableau Reader, we can view visualizations and workbooks created with Tableau Desktop or Tableau Public. Data can be filtered, but modifications and editing are not allowed. In Tableau Reader, workbooks can be viewed by anyone.

If you wish to share dashboards you have created, the receiver must have Tableau Reader installed.

Hence, these are all the products / tools used in Tableau with their usecases.
