Telangana to Introduce AI Learning for Primary Students Starting Next Academic Year

Hyderabad – In a landmark move to modernize primary education, the Telangana Education Department is set to embed artificial intelligence (AI) concepts and digital learning initiatives into the mathematics curriculum for Classes I to V, beginning with the next academic year.

Alongside mastering fundamental arithmetic operations like addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division, young learners will now explore the basics of computers and AI. This progressive step aims to equip students early on with digital literacy and problem-solving skills aligned with emerging technologies.

The revamped curriculum, currently under development by the State Council of Educational Research and Training (SCERT), will see Class I and II students introduced to basic computer literacy, while Class IV and V students will delve into the foundational principles of AI.

“This is part of a larger strategy to integrate technology into early education. The curriculum framework is still being finalized,” a senior education official shared.

Pilot Rollout in Select Schools Across Telangana

The initiative will first be launched on a pilot basis, covering five primary schools in each of Telangana’s 20 districts, including regions such as Karimnagar, Warangal, Siddipet, Adilabad, Mahabubnagar, and Bhadradri Kothagudem, among others.

During a recent meeting led by Dr. Yogita Rana, Secretary of the Education Department, and EV Narasimha Reddy, Director of School Education, district collectors pledged their support for implementing the project in their respective areas.

Capacity Building for Teachers

To ensure the successful rollout of this AI-integrated curriculum, select teachers and cluster resource persons from 100 primary schools will undergo a two-day training program at MCR HRD Institute in Hyderabad on April 3 and 4. These educators will, in turn, facilitate AI learning sessions for students between April 21 and 22.

Strengthening Foundational Learning with AI Tools

Additionally, the department is introducing AI-based tools to enhance foundational literacy and numeracy (FLN) through the FLN-AI (AXL) program, which is being piloted in 513 primary schools. This AI-driven platform offers personalized, web-based learning experiences, allowing students to improve essential literacy and numeracy skills at their own pace.

By blending traditional learning with digital innovation, Telangana is setting the stage for a tech-savvy generation equipped to thrive in the digital economy.
